About Packet Passport: Technology for Independent Work and Life

Meet William McGill
I founded Packet Passport to blend technology and innovation with a spirit of exploration. It’s a platform where I build practical, resilient systems that support independent work and life – and where I share those lessons with others looking to do the same.
I’m an independent contractor with a suitcase in one hand and a cloud stack in the other. For over two decades, I’ve worked at the intersection of IT, insurance, and disaster recovery – configuring systems and networks in hospitals and schools, settling complex claims for major carriers, and solving real-world problems wherever the work takes me.
Today, through Packet Passport, I focus on:
- Designing and deploying self-hosted infrastructure
- Building AI workflows and cloud integrations
- Creating systems that empower people to work smarter and more independently
Packet Passport is a living platform of independent systems and scalable ideas. Built for myself. Built for what’s next.
If you’re curious about how Packet Passport came to be, check out The Start of Something New: Building More Than a Website.
This site is equal parts tech journal and travel companion. It’s where I document the systems I build, the tools I rely on, and the mindset it takes to adapt – whether to a new platform rollout or a city I’m just getting to know.
What You'll Find Here
Here, I share insights on:
- Working remotely in high-stakes industries
- Automating workflows to stay lean and effective
- Balancing logic and intuition in code and life
- Adapting to new cities and projects on the road
The Mission
To build a sustainable, mobile, and honest approach to independent work – and to share what I learn along the way.
Where Tech Meets the Road
Packet Passport is where tech meets the road – a personal log of lessons learned in both cables and crossroads.
Proven Results in Web Development
Whether you’re looking for an independent cloud system, workflow automation, or an SEO-friendly website you can fully control, I can help. Projects like SciFiction.com – now reaching over 70,000 visitors each month – show that practical, well-built systems can also achieve big results.
